What is True PDF Redaction?

Many online tools and basic PDF readers claim to "redact" documents by simply drawing a black rectangle over sensitive text. This is highly dangerous. Drawing a shape on top of a PDF does not delete the original text hidden underneath it. Anyone can open the document, delete the black box, or simply copy-paste the text hidden beneath it.

When you draw a redaction box, we physically "burn" that black box into the pixel data of the page and rebuild the PDF from scratch as an un-editable image. This destroys the underlying font files, vector data, and hidden metadata, guaranteeing that the redacted information is gone forever.

The Flattening Trade-Off: Security over Searchability

Because our tool prioritizes absolute security, applying redactions permanently converts your vector-based PDF into an image-based PDF. While this is the only way to mathematically guarantee that hidden text cannot be leaked, it does come with trade-offs you should be aware of:

Loss of Searchability: You will no longer be able to highlight, copy, or search for text within the redacted document (unless you run it through OCR software later).
Increased File Size: Image-based PDFs are generally larger than text-based PDFs. We highly recommend using our Compress PDF tool on the final file if size is an issue.
